Antique Cast Iron Still Penny Bank Scarce Gold Colored Prancing Horse Canadian

Description:  A beautiful antique cast iron still penny bank.  It is cast in the form of a prancing horse with its right hoof up as well as his head. The horse, which is made of cast iron colored in throughout, but has lost quite of bit of it, with remnants on the bottom between its legs and on its back as well as its mane. The piece has acquired a dark patina with age, where the original coloring is lost.  The bank is made of two halves held together with a screw, which we believe is original to the piece. We have opened the bank and found running of the gold coloring on the inside but did not find any markings. The inside also has surface oxidation, but nothing to worry about. The bank has the coin slot on the back of the horses' neck and ending on his back.  See page 86 (bank number 518) in Andy and Susan Moore's book "The Penny Bank Book; Collecting Still Banks" Published by Schiffer Books, of Exton, PA in 1984 for a similar example. This bank was purchased as part of a large collection of cast iron penny banks, which we will be listing over the coming weeks and months. Date: Early 1900's.

Origin: Purchased in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA.

Size: measures approximately 4 1/4" in height to the top of the ears. The piece also measures about 4 3/4" long and is about 1 1/2" at its widest.  The bank weighs ~10.5 ounces.

Maker: Unknown.

Marks: Unmarked.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: Very nice and rare bank in excellent condition.

Condition: Bank is in excellent condition with no repairs or breaks. It has lost much of its original paint, but still retain some on the back and below on the belly. It has acquired a darkened patina with age which gives it a nice character. The bank also has a pinhole on the side of the horse opposite where the screw goes in, which we believe is original to the making of  the piece. Other than that we see no other issues. In Closing:  Definitely a quality scarce piece that is all original. It is a well made piece and would make an excellent addition to your still penny banks collection.
