977 Walter & June Gottshall Carved Painted Wood Comb Box Brown Cat Crouching
Description: A beautiful carved softwood (most likely pine) and polychrome painted hanging comb box. Although the box has no wire or attachment to hang from, we still believe it is meant to be a hanging comb box reminiscent of hanging comb boxes of days gone by. The comb box has the carving of a cat crouching and looking at you as you look at the box. The box as well as the cat is painted in brown with gray or off-white highlights. The front of the box is curved with the edge colored in gray. The front panel has a notched edge all along three sides (bottom and two short sides) with yellow dots all along the four sides. The cat itself has black whiskers and off-white highlights with blue colored eyes. The back of the box is painted in the same brown color the front and the cat are painted in. A great looking piece of folk are signed on the bottom WJG 77, for Walter and June Gottshall 1977. A great looking piece of Pennsylvania folk art to add to your collection The piece just looks great and has a very nice appearance. Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania, USA.
Size: Box measures ~10" by ~2 7/8" with the back being ~9" at its highest point. The piece weighs ~9.5 ounces.
Maker: Walter and June Gottshall.
Marks: WJG 77 written in ink on the bottom.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This a very nice and uncommon piece of Americana folk art worthy of a spot in your collection.
Condition: The piece is in very good condition. It is intact with no breaks, no repairs and minimum losses to the paint if any. Its colors are fresh and all there. This is a very uncommon piece of folk art by Walter and June, which you do not see often. The piece has some dust and light soiling and could use a good cleaning, but we leave that to the discretion of the new owners. Although the box has no wire or attachment to hang from, we still believe it is meant to be a hanging comb box reminiscent of hanging comb boxes of days gone by.
