Antique Carved Wood Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge Gavel Dated 1874
Description: An antique carved wood of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows lodge gavel. The wood gavel is carved with the three interlocked rings associated with this fraternal group. It is also carved with the initial “J” and the date 1874 near the hole where the handle fits. The gavel was obviously used at a lodge during the meeting. It has developed a dark patina and the handle shows smoothness and wear indicative of use. The head of the gavel has several cracks that we show in the photos and the handle has a couple of short cracks. The handle is loose and slips out of the gavel's head easily. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: The gavel is dated 1874.
Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Size: The Gavel is ~99 1/2" long with the head being ~3 1/2" by ~2 1/4" by ~1 3/4". The gavel weighs about 5.5 ounces.
Maker: Unknown.
Marks: Unmarked as too the maker. It is carved J. 1874.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A nice piece of Americana with a good look, which would be a great addition to your collection of IOOF or fraternal orders memorabilia.
Condition: The gavel is in fair used condition given its age and utilitarian function. It has developed a dark patina and the handle shows smoothness and wear indicative of use. The head of the gavel has several cracks that we show in the photos and the handle has a couple of short cracks. However, both pieces are intact, in original used condition, and show no signs of repair. The handle is loose and slips out of the gavel's head easily. Be that as it may, this is an interesting historical piece worthy of a spot in your collection. Please see photos for additional condition information.
