Antique Engraved Sterling Matchsafe or Vesta Floral and Foliate Design
Description: An antique match safe or vesta made sterling silver. This match safe is bright-cut engraved with a very nice floral and foliate design on one side. It has a striker on the bottom and a hinged lid.
Date: Probably made in the late 1800s or early 1900s most likely in the USA.
Marks: Has no markings as to the maker's name. It is marked STERLING on the lip. In addition there are some letters engraved along the lip, which look like it could be MMEE?
Size: Measures 2 1/2" long, 1 1/2" wide and is ~1/4" deep.
Condition: The striker on the bottom shows use and is encrusted with residual from many matches being struck on it. The hinged lid works great. The vesta has no several minor dings and dents on the back side. In addition, it has scratches, which can be seen in the photos. However, these shortcomings are commensurate with the piece's age, which we believe is from the late 1800s or early 1900s. Please see photos to appreciate the beauty and condition of this piece. A true antique available to you for a reasonable price.
