Antique Painted Redware Apple Form Still Coin Bank Large Coin Slot on Top

  • $ 87.77

Description: An antique painted redware still coin bank. The bank is shaped in the form of an apple and is painted in red. The surface of the bank is smooth to mimic the surface of an apple. The bank has a flattened bottom with a recessed center on which it can stand. It does have a flattened top again with a recessed center, where a stem would be. It has a rather large in width and length coin slot at the edge of the top. The red color exhibits losses and discoloration and you can see the base coloring which was put before applying the red paint. The bank also has some spots where all the coloring is lost and you can see the redware under it. The piece also has a few stains and several spots where the surface is uneven and shows crevasses and bumps all being original to the making as you would expect from an antique primitive piece of pottery. Examination of the surface reveal the presence of a few minor surface chips to the color where you can see the redware. Other than that, the piece has quite a bit of discoloration and color losses as well as some staining. Other than that, the bank is intact and has general soiling. An antique toy in relatively good condition, which would display nicely in your collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: Unknown, but we believe it was made sometime in 1880.

Origin: Purchased at an antique auction in southeastern Pennsylvania.

Size: Measures ~3 3/8" in diameter and is ~4" high. The bank weighs ~8 ounces.

Maker: Unknown.

Marks: Unmarked.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a nice and relatively uncommon antique with very interesting shape, subject, and coloring. Definitely deserves a spot in your antique redware collection or antique pottery still banks.

Condition:  Bank is in relatively good condition. It has general soiling and displays spots where the color is scratched off or has chipped off. The bank also has some scratches to the surface, loss of color, and general soiling. The red color exhibits losses and discoloration and you can see the base coloring which was put before applying the red paint. The bank has no breaks, hairlines, or repairs that we could find. However, the piece has many of the usual issues associated with old piece of primitive pottery such as pops, slubs, uneven surfaces, areas where the coloring did not fully flow, and areas of general roughness. Be that as it may, this is a nice piece in relatively good condition despite being an old toy. Because of the discoloration and all the chips to the coloring, we are selling the piece "AS IS" at a fraction of its true value. Please see photos for additional condition information.
