Antique Painted Stoneware Pear Form Still Coin Bank Horizontal Coin Slot
Description: An antique painted stoneware still coin bank. The bank is shaped in the form of a pear and is painted in light greenish yellow and red colors. The surface of the bank is smooth to mimic the surface of a pear. The bank has a pear shape with a flattened bottom, having a flattened center on which it can stand. It does have a slanted horizontal coin slot in the center of the side and remnants of a stem in the center of the top of the pear (it seems that the stem, which was probably long, was broken over time). Red and Greenish yellow in color the bank has a few spots where the color is scratched off. The piece also has a few stains and several spots where the surface is uneven and shows crevasses that are original to the making as you would expect from an antique primitive piece of pottery. Examination of the surface reveal the presence of a few minor surface chips to the color. Other than that, the bank is in very good condition with some scratches, minor loss of color, a broken off stem, and general soiling. A very nice antique in relatively good condition, which would display nicely in your collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: Unknown, but we believe it was made sometime in 1880.
Origin: Purchased at an antique auction in southeastern Pennsylvania.
Size: Measures ~3 3/4" in diameter and is ~5" high. The bank weighs ~7 ounces.
Maker: Unknown.
Marks: Unmarked.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a nice and relatively uncommon antique with very interesting shape, subject, and coloring. Definitely deserves a prominent spot in your antique redware collection.
Condition: Bank is in relatively good condition. It has general soiling and displays a few spots where the color is scratched off or has chipped off, but these are small and minimum in number. The bank also has some scratches to the surface, loss of color, and general soiling. The wooden stem on top of the pear is broken off and only a short stub is evident. The bank has no breaks, hairlines, or repairs that we could find. However, the piece has some of the usual issues associated with old piece of primitive pottery such as pops, slubs, uneven surfaces, areas where the coloring did not fully flow, and areas of general roughness. Be that as it may, this is a nice piece in relatively good condition despite being an old toy. Because of the broken stem, we are selling the piece "AS IS" at a fraction of its true value. Please see photos for additional condition information.
