Antique Pewter Snuff Box Manufactured By J. M. Carlstedt Rockford Illinois USA
Description: This antique (circa late 19 century or early 20th century) heavy pewter snuff box or snuffbox made by J. M. Carlstedt of Rockford Illinois in the United States. The box, which is rectangular in shape, has rounded sides and is lightly rounded or curved on top and bottom. The box also has rounded corners. The piece has well-formed integral hinges and the lid itself has an extension to the front to allow you to open it easily. The box is undecorated and has smooth surfaces throughout. It has a silvery look to it and is rather heavy and feels great in your hand. The inside of the lid has the following inscription in raised lettering "MANUFACTURED B J. M. CARLSTEDT ROCKFORD ILLS". A great and substantial snuff box in very good condition after being around for over 100 years. The box has a paper sticker applied to the bottom, most likely put there by the previous owner, which describes the box. A nice addition to any collection. Date: Uncertain but was made sometime in late 1800th (19th century) to early 1900s (20th century).
Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The piece was make in Rokford Illinois.
Size: The box measures ~3 1/4" by ~1 3/4" by ~1" and weighs about 3 ounces.
Maker: J. M. Carlstedt. Marks: Marked "MANUFACTURED B J. M. CARLSTEDT ROCKFORD ILLS" on the inside of the lid.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: An interesting antique snuffbox in very good condition, which would make a great addition to your snuffbox collection or tobacco/smoking related collection.
Condition: The box is in very good condition with minor dents, dings, scratches, and staining. However, the box is all original with no breaks or repairs. The hinged lid works great and the lid closes as it should. The interior of the box has is soiled and has darkened from use. The piece has a label affixed to the bottom, which we chose not to remove. Be that as it may, these issues do not distract from the beauty of the piece. The box could probably use a good cleaning to bring its full beauty out, but we leave that to the discretion of the new owner. Just a nice antique pewter snuffbox worthy of a spot in any collection.
