Antique Small Redware Glazed Apple Butter Crock Southeastern Pennsylvania

Description: Redware antique small Apple Butter crock with beautiful reddish-brown colored glaze on both the exterior and interior. The crock has a beautiful ovoid shape with a flat base and a simple molded rim. The sides are rounded and is undecorated. The crock has no other decoration, but has a beautiful classic shape and color. The base is unglazed and shows the typical colors of old unglazed redware. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: Uncertain, but most likely was made in late 1800s or early 1900s.

Origin: Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Size: 3 7/8" diameter on top, ~2 3/4" diameter on bottom, and is ~4 1/4" tall. The piece weighs a bit over 14 ounces.

Maker: Unknown.

Marks: No markings.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is an antique and beautiful Jar or Crock. It has the beautiful classic shape of a preserve or apple butter crock. It is of a small size and weighs a little over 14 ounces. The very nice form and color makes this piece a true beauty and great to display. It is beautiful and in great shape after being around for over 100 years. This crock deserves a prominent spot in any redware collection.

Condition: The crock is in good condition given its age. It has no cracks, hairlines, or repairs. It does have general crazing throughout and losses to the glaze inside and out, which can be seen in the photos. The exterior glaze also shows scratches as if someone took a pin to it sometime in the past, which can be seen in the photos. The piece also has some minor shallow chips or flakes where the glaze is lost around the inside and outside of the rim and one or two small old chips at the base, which can be seen in the photos. Finally as is the case with all these primitive old redware pieces, the crock has a few of the usual defects you would expect such as pops, unglazed areas and uneven spots. Please carefully review the photos to fully appreciate the beauty and condition of this old piece.
