Old Wood Iron Hand Decorated w/ Colorful Tulips Manual Coffee Spice Mill Grinder

  • $ 77.77

Description: A very nice-looking antique coffee or spice mill or grinder. The mill has a wooden constructed bottom and a metal (non-ferrous since it does not stick to a magnet) hopper with a cast iron crank and grinding mechanism. The hopper, which is open, is made of metal and is rather small in size. The crank has a wooden knob, which is obviously missing something, at the end for comfort while grinding. The wooden base is of dove tail construction with the bottom being nailed to it. It has a drawer which is equipped with a metal, possibly brass, knob. The inside on the drawer has been painted with red coloring, while the front of the drawer as well as the top of the grinder have been decorated with a beautiful floral design showing red and yellow tulips on green stems and leaves. The piece works well and appears to be all original with later decorations and paint. Please carefully view the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: Uncertain, but it could be from late19th century to early 20th century.

Origin: Purchased at an estate sale in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Size: The base measures ~6 1/2" by ~6 1/4", is ~6 7/8" high to the top of the hopper and ~9 1/8" high to the top of the wooden knob at the end of the crank. The piece weighs about 2 pounds and 10 ounces.

Maker: Unknown.

Marks: Unmarked.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: Just a very nice and great looking antique coffee mill, which would make a great addition to your collection.

Condition: In very good condition with no breaks, damage, or repairs that we could identify. The mill appears to be all original with later decoration as well as the later red coloring inside the drawer. The piece shows wear commensurate with its age and utilitarian function. The crank and the grinding mechanism appear to be in good working order. The knob at the end of the crack appears to be missing something and thus it is a bit lose on the pin holding it. Be that as it may the knob is solidly in place and still provides the service for which it was installed. The piece is soiled, shows wear throughout with scratches, nicks, minor wood losses at the corners of the base and drawer. In addition, the drawer has a crack in its base, but is solid and still all together. It would appear that the piece was refinished and possibly lacquered, which truly makes look good. This is a great piece and would display very well in your collection. Please view photos for additional condition information.
