Rare Antique Cast Brass Heavy Doorstop Box Turtle on all Four

  • $ 137.77

Description: A very nice and rather heavy (3 pounds 14 ounces) antique cast brass doorstop. The doorstop is cast in the form of a turtle on the move on all four with its tail pointing straight to the back. The turtle has its head pointed slightly upwards. The casting shows the details of the toes and the head as well as the segmented top shell. The piece is either painted or rather soiled but you can see the golden coloring of brass in the rubbings of the high points on the piece and the bottom of the feet. The piece also has residual white paint spots on the back left foot, Black paint on the back above the left foot, some green paint on one of its sides, and additional spots of white paint here and there. We believe that the piece was used while the place was being painted and was not protected from paint splatter. The inside of the piece is hollow and has orange paint marking, which can be seen in the photos. The piece is rather soiled and shows extensive use and abuse. It could use a good cleaning to bring it back to its original condition but we leave that to the discretion of the new owner. See page 169 in John and Nancy Smith Book "The Doorstop Book-An Encyclopedia of Doorstop Collecting" published by Schiffer Publishing Ltd of Atglen, PA in 2005, for similar examples. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of the description.
