Vintage Manganese Glazed Redware Pot Ear-shaped Handles By James C. Seagraves
Description: A nice size manganese glazed and sponge decorated redware pot or small crock having ear-shaped handles handmade made by James C Seagraves. The orangish brown colored pot has dark brown or black sponging indicative of manganese glazing throughout the exterior. The pot has a flat round base with rounded sides ending is a shaped then rolled rim. The piece has two small ear-shaped handles on opposite sides. The piece is glazed inside and outside with the sponging only evident on the outside. The piece which was hand thrown, was most likely made in the period 1950-1970. The flat base is marked on the underside "JCS." A beautiful piece of modern redware to add to your collection. Please carefully view photos as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: Uncertain but most likely sometime in the period 1950-1970.
Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in southeastern Pennsylvania.
Size: Measures ~3 1/2" in diameter at the base, ~5 1/2" in diameter at the top, is ~6 1/4" at its widest including the handles, and is ~4" high. The piece weighs a little over one pound and 4 ounces.
Maker: James Christian Seagraves.
Marks: Marked "JCS" on bottom in cursive calligraphy.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A beautiful piece of contemporary redware made by a master potter. An unusual piece, which deserves a prominent spot in your redware collection.
Condition: The pot is in very good condition with no cracks, chips, hairlines, or repairs. The piece has general crazing to the glaze throughout, which is difficult to see but is there.
