Vintage Sterling Weighted Two Candlestick Holders Cement Filled and Rod Reinforced By Gorham
Description: A nice pair of vintage Gorham Sterling weighted candlestick holders. The holders have a flat base which rises in a step like fashion to a neck which then rises to a cup in the shape of a tulip flower to hold a candlestick. This is a short rather than the tall version of these holders. It is monogrammed with the letter "B" but only on one of the two sticks. The two sticks are marked with the indication that they are cement filled and reinforced with rod. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of the description.
Date: Uncertain, but most likely mid to late 20th century.
Origin: Rhode Island, USA.
Size: Both pieces measure ~3 3/4" in diameter at the base, ~2" diameter at the top, and are ~3 5/8" high. Both pieces together weigh about one pound and 6.5 ounces.
Maker: Gorham Silver Co.
Marks: Both pieces are marked on the bottom of the base with the words "GORHAN; STERLING; CEMENT FILLED; REINFORCED WITH ROD; 661" with both having some letters and numbers scratched on the bottom by what we believe was the previous owner.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a very nice pair of candlestick holders made by a famous American silversmith. They would make a great addition to your collection.
Condition: The pair is in relatively good condition with no breaks or repairs. They could use a good cleaning since they are well tarnished, but we will leave that to the new owner. Both holders have dings at the edge of the base and along the body of the candlestick holder with surface scratches throughout. One has a monogram depicting the letter "B" and an area of concentrated scratches to the side which we attempt to show in the 8th and 9th photos. Finally the monogrammed piece has a crease on the base, probably resulting from dropping the piece on a hard floor. They both have some general wear commensurate with their age and utilitarian function. Be that as it may both pieces look great once cleaned as you can see from the photos and would display nicely in your collection. Please see photo for additional condition information.
