1819 LIX Great Britain Silver Coin Five Shillings or Crown King George III VF++

  • $ 1,177.00

Description: A beautiful very fine or much better five shillings or one crown silver coin from the United Kingdom. The coin, which is dated 1819, displays the laureated head of King George III facing right on the obverse. The reverse displays the image of Saint George on his horse slaying the dragon and facing right. The coin has the words "GEORGIUS III D.G.BRITANNIARUM REX F.D." surrounding the king's head on the obverse. There is also the date 1819 below the king's head. The reverse has the legend "HONI · SOIT · QUI · MAL · Y · PENSE." along the edge surrounding St. George's image. Both obverse and reverse have the name "P I S T R U C C I" below the image for Benedetto Pistrucci the chief engraver at the Royal Mint in London at that time. The edge of the coin has lettering which reads "DECUS ET TUTAMEN ANNO REGNI LIX" an indication that this was King George's 49th year on the throne. The coin weighs ~28.2 grams of 0.925 silver and is ~37.5 mm. Please carefully review the photos provided as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: 1819.

Mint: Great Britain.

Size and weight: The silver coin weighs ~28.2 gm and is ~37.5 mm in diameter. References: It is KM #675.

Condition: I would grade this coin as a nice very fine or much better. The coin is nicely toned and shows wear commensurate with its age and circulated state. The fields have a few scratches, some bag marks, and nice toning that brings the devices out giving them a great look. The coin has minor dings along the edge, which truly are hard to observe but are there. The coin is much better than the photos suggest. A nice coin with very nice eye appeal. Please see photos for additional condition information.
