Antique Cast Iron Crimping Rocking Iron Geneva, IL. Hand Fluter For Pleating and Crimping Material

Description:  A great antique, circa 1860s, ironing implement. This is the cast iron rocking iron hand fluter used for pleating and crimping material. It is made of cast iron with a corrugated base which can be heated on the stove.  It has a cast iron rocking semi circle piece with a cast iron handle which when rocked over the base, where material is laid down would crimp or pleat the material. See page 60 of Kathryn McNerney's book "Antique Iron, Identification and Values" published by Collector Books of Paducah, KY in 1984, for a similar example.

Date: Patent Date August 21, 1866.

Origin: Geneva, Illinois, USA

Size: Base measures 6" by 4". The rocking iron is 4" by 3" and is 4" high when the handle is considered. This is a very substantial item weighing 4 1/2 pounds.

Maker: Made in Geneva. IL.

Marks: The base is marked on the bottom "PAT, D AUGUST 21, 1866.; HEAT THIS." while the rocking iron is marked "GENEVA ILL" on top of the handle and "GENEVA HAND FLUTER" on top of the rocking iron.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a very nice antique, which is rather rare and very seldom comes by. This is really a substantial piece weighing four and half pounds.

Condition: It is in excellent condition, with no breaks, cracks, repairs or losses. It does show wear, soiling, and some spots of surface rust in some spots. The handle is a bit loose but is still solidly in place. Finally, the back of the rocking portion has some residue build-up from use. Please see photo for additional condition information.

In Closing: This is a very nice antique which is rather rare and unusual in excellent condition. It would make a great addition to your collection.
