Islamic Coin Spain Umayyad 347AH Silver Dirham Abdul Rahman III Madinat al-Zahra

  • $ 139.99

Description: A nice very fine Umayyad of Spain silver dirham from 347AH (958 AD). This coin is attributed to Abdul Rahman III, the Umayyad Caliph who ruled Islamic or Arab Southern Spain in the period 300-350 AH (912-961 AD). The coin clearly shows the date of minting as 347AH and the mint as Madinat al-Zahra or Medina Azahara. This coin is well struck and has fairly readable legends. The obverse has a bit of a muddled legend in the center but one can still read All Imam .... Amir al Mu’minin". The coin cites Ahmad on the reverse, thus making it Album 350.10. The coin has a nice round flan with a fairly well centered strike. A nice-looking silver coin that is over 1100 years old with nice readable calligraphy. The coin has nice eye appeal and beautiful appearance and looks much better than the photos suggest Please carefully review the scans presented as it is part and parcel of our description.

Date: Struck 347 AH or 958 AD.

Mint: The coin clearly shows mint location being Madinat al-Zahra presumably on the outskirts of current day Cordoba in Southern Spain.

Size and weight: This is a silver dirham, weighs ~2.9 grams and is ~22.5 mm in diameter.

References: It is Album 350.10 and is listed in Wilkes as 556.

Condition: I would grade this coin as very fine with a well centered strike and having readable Calligraphy. The coin is nicely struck with a partially muddled legend on the obverse. It has a nice round flan with readable edge legend. It shows some wear especially at the high points. It also has some scratches and bag marks. Other than that, the coin looks much better than the photos suggest and is a nice-looking piece. Please see photos for additional condition information.
