The rattle, which is made of an uncertain metal has a built in whistle and three rings with attached small three dimensional  round shaped free moving metal appendages. The frame has a sliding back and when opened reveals three copies of a business card of the artist P. Rodde. The piece is signed “P. Rodde” and dated “1895”. P. The plate is stamped and shows a girl walking with a purse in her hand with a lamb following and a tree in its flat center. The center rises with slightly curved short side walls to a flat rim. The plate's flat rim is slightly slanted towards the center. The rim displays the alphabet from A to Z. The center has the famous nursery rhyme which goes \"Mary Had a Little Lamb Its Fleece Was White as Snow Everywhere Mary Went The Lamb Was Sure To Go\" surrounding the image in the center. This plate has seen quite a bit of use and lost most of its finish showing the bare metal throughout the top of the plate. The bottom of the plate is better preserved and shows what the plate must have looked like when it was new. Additional Information: Interestingly, 'Mary had a little lamb' is an American nursery rhyme first published by the Boston publishing firm Marsh, Capen \u0026amp; Lyon, as an poem by Sarah Josepha Hale on May 24, 1830, and was possibly inspired by an actual incident. The rhyme was the first audio recorded by Thomas Edison on his newly invented phonograph in 1877. It is all original with no repairs, except for possibly the mirror on the inside of the lid, which we feel may have been replaced at a later date. The hinge is intact and the lid closes well. The enameling throughout the inside and outside has some hairline cracks more pronounced on the outside especially on the lid and the back side of the box. It is less pronounced on the inside. The box also has a couple of chips to the enamel which can be seen in the photos. The mirror on the inside of the lid is clean and intact.
