Antique Stereo Card Viewer Wood with Brass Tacks Construction Late 1800's SATURNSCOPE James Davis of New York Sole Agent

  • $ 87.77

Description: A beautiful antique stereo card viewer or Sterioptic Viewer. The viewer is made of a nice dark brown wood with brass tacks as decoration accent along the edge of the eye piece. The eye piece is equipped with two glass lenses and has an attached wood rail on which the wood card holder goes back and forth to adjust the view. The viewer has a nice wooden handle on the bottom which swivels up and down to allow for easy storing of the piece. The eye piece is lined with a velvety material along the edge so that a face would rest on it comfortably. The wood rail is marked on the underside with impressed lettering as follows "THE SATURNSCOPR; JAMES M. DAVIS; WASHINGTON PLACE N.Y. U.S.A.; SOLE AGENT" followed by indication that it is patented in many countries. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of the description.

Date: Mid to late 1900's.

Origin: New York, United States.

Size: The eye pieces is ~ 5 1/4" in width and ~3 1/8" in height. The entire piece is ~12 3/4" in length and is 6 7/8" at its widest. It is ~8" high with the handle fully open. The piece weighs about 10 ounces.

Maker: Unknown.

Marks: Has the impressed words "THE SATURNSCOPR; JAMES M. DAVIS; WASHINGTON PLACE N.Y. U.S.A.; SOLE AGENT" followed by indication that it is patented in many countries worldwide.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A beautiful antique piece in relatively good condition. Truly a nice piece and would be a nice addition to your collection.

Condition: The piece is in generally good condition with scratches and minor wear. The optics are good with one of the lenses a bit loose but still well in place. The velvet lining of the eye piece is soiled, has faded, has wear, but has no losses and is solidly in place. The piece is soiled and dusty and would probably benefit for a good cleaning. The only issue we see is the fact that the sliding photo holder has a small chip to the wood which exposes one of legs of a metal bracket which makes it pop out (see the last two photos). We believe this can be secured in place with glue if you so desire but we leave that to the discretion of the new owner. Other than that this is great and rather rare piece worthy of a spot in your collection. Please see photos for additional condition information.
