German Porcelain Stein Painted on Three Sides with Lithophane Lid Featuring Locomotive with Flower Thumb Piece Hand Decorated with Karl Rau Mark

Description: A very nice porcelain stein made in Germany. The stein has a round base with straight sides tilted slightly inwards and ending in a plain rim. The base has a lithophane showing a German couple dancing in its center. The exterior of the stein is decorated with paintings showing a locomotive in the center. There are also several vignettes showing a train chugging along on a raised bridge, soldiers guarding a bridge and two with trusse bridges. The stein has extensive writing in German with text along the top edge of the stein and along the base of the stein showing the dates 1883-1985. The stein has a metal lid, possibly pewter, with locomotive on top and has a thumb piece in the form of a flower. Just a gorgeous German lithophane stein to add to your collection. The piece has the mark of Karl Rau which consists of the letters K and R back to back with a crown above and the word Germany below all in silver coloring. Date: Uncertain but most likely sometime in the 1950s.

Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The stein itself was made in Germany Size: Measures ~4 5/8" diameter at the base, ~3" diameter on top, ~5 3/4" at its widest including the handle and is ~9 1/4" high to the top of the locomotive. The piece weighs almost 2 pounds.

Maker: Karl Rau.

Marks: Marked with the Karl Rau mark consisting of the letters K and R back to back with a crown above and the word Germany below all in silver coloring. There is also the words "HAND Mak???" below the mark and letters IMO DAHRE above it.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a nice piece of German porcelain with very nice decoration mimicking old steins of days gone by. It would make a nice addition to your collection of decorated German porcelain steins, Beer related item, or make for a great conversation piece. Condition: The stein is in excellent condition with no hairlines, repairs, chips or crazing. The colors are vivid and the design is truly very interesting. The lid is in excellent condition and has no dings or damage, but has a few minor scratches, some soiling, and is a bit off center (it is tilted to the left as can be seen in the photos). Be that as it may, this is a very nice piece, which would make a nice addition to your collection. Please see photos for additional condition information.
