Unusual Antique Large and Heavy Desktop Crystal Inkwell with Hinged Brass Lid

Description: A late 19th or early 20th century large and rather heavy crystal inkwell having a hinged brass lid. The inkwell has a flat and round base with a central 24 point star burst pattern. The sides of the inkwell are ribbed with angled ribs which get wider as they go down from the top to the base. The inkwell has a shoulder supporting a short glass neck with a circular opening on top. The neck and opening are covered with a brass collar having a hinged lid. The lid itself is rounded and domed. The piece is rather large and heavy, it is ~4" in diameter at the base, is ~5" high to the top of the closed lid and weighs over 3 pounds and 10 ounces. A great and very unusual piece that is in very good condition after being around for over 100 years. An interesting piece to add to your collection. Date: Unknown but most likely late 1800s (late 19th century) to early 1900s (early 20th century).

Origin: Purchased at an estate sale in Southern New Jersey.

Size: Base measures ~4" in diameter, it is ~5" high to the top of the closed lid, with the well opening being ~1 1/4" in diameter and the depth of the well itself being ~2 1/8". The inkwell weighs over 3 pounds and 10 ounces.

Maker: Unknown.

Marks: Unmarked as to the maker.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A nice and very unusual antique inkwell to add to your collection.

Condition: The inkwell is in very good condition. The piece has no chips, no cracks, no hairlines, and no repairs. The brass lid and collar have a few minor bumps, a ding or two, and scratches throughout. They have lost their shine and could probably use a good polishing. The base of the inkwell shows scratches to the glass surface but no losses or breaks. The exterior shows soiling and dust between the ribbing and a few scratches and a minimum number of minor nicks. Be that as it may, the piece is in very good condition, is intact after being around for all these years and is great looking. It would make a great addition to your collection of glass inkwells.
