Vintage Brass Thirty Ounces Plumb Bob With Steel Tip ~6 3/4" Long Unmarked

  • $ 49.99

Description: This is a nice, heavy (the piece weighs about 29.5 ounces), large measuring ~6 3/4" long, and fairly old brass conical plumb bob. The plumb bob, which is conical in shape is made of brass and has what we believe is a hardened steel tip. The piece has a toned brass coloring with darkened spots, nicks, and scratches as well as a textured steel tip. The top has short (~3/4") cylindrical extension with an inserted piece of rope from which it would have hung. The body of the plumb bob is unmarked but we weighed it using our postal scale and found it to be about 29.5 ounces or 1 pound and 13.5 ounces. This Plumb Bob has been used extensively in the past as evidenced by the many dings, scratches, and staining to the surface. These tools have been used since the times of the ancient Egyptians in construction to ensure that the construction is plumb or vertical. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: Uncertain but most likely sometime in the early to mid 1900s.

Origin: Purchased an estate sale in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Size: The piece measures ~6 3/4" long and ~1 3/4" diameter at its widest. The piece weighs about 29.5 ounces (Nominal weight 30 ounces).

Maker: Unknown.

Marks: Unmarked.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: Very nice old tool with nice coloring. A quality piece in relatively good condition; a nice addition to your collection of vintage tools.

Condition: The piece is in good condition with no breaks or repairs. It has extensive wear commensurate with its age and use. The tip is intact and the end is still nicely pointed but a bit flattened. The entire piece is covered with nicks, scratches, dings, stains, and wear to the finish throughout, which is evident in the photos. Be that as it may, the piece is useful, solid and intact.
