Vintage Parquetry Decorated Rectangular Tin Lined Wood Humidor w/ Sponge Holder

  • $ 77.77

Description: An old humidor or cigar box made of wood. The humidor is rectangular in shape and its exterior is nicely decorated with inlaid parquetry with geometric design of black, yellow and red coloring. The veneered exterior is brown in color and the decoration is on the lid and all four sides. The bottom of the box has a faded orange colored felt like material and has four applied round feet in the corners. The humidor has a brass escutcheon for a key with an intact locking mechanism. However, unfortunately we do not have the key. The interior of the humidor is lined with tin like material but does not stick to a magnet (it is nonferrous). The inside of lid has two brackets holding a perforated pate where a wet cloth or thin sponge would fit to provide the proper humidification to the cigars to be stored in the box. There are two hinges on the inside to allow the lid to hold in place when the box is opened. A beautiful nice size box or humidor to add to your collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: Uncertain, but most likely sometime in the early to mid 1900s.

Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Size: Humidor measures ~10 7/8" long, ~6 3/4" wide and is ~4 7/8" high to the top of the closed lid. The piece weighs slightly over 2 pounds and 9 ounces.

Maker: Unknown.

Marks: Unmarked.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: Truly a nice humidor retaining its original finish with nice parquetry decoration and in very good condition, which would make a worthy addition to your collection.

Condition: Humidor is in very good condition given its age. The humidor is relatively clean with no breaks or repairs that we could see. The parquetry is intact with no obvious losses while the exterior finish shows some wear and is faded a bit. The interior is relatively clean and intact. One of the hinges is a bit bent, but the lid still functions properly. The perforated plate for the sponge has a couple of dings but nothing of concern and still fits in the brackets properly. One of the two brackets holding the plate is a bit loose and slightly bent, but still function the way it should. The felt in the bottom of the piece shows extensive wear and loss of color. The four feet supporting the piece may be a more recent addition or replacement, but they look good and provide good protection to the piece. Be that as it may, this is a great piece to add to your collection. Please see photos for additional condition information.
