Vintage Stoneware Ginger Bottle By E. P. Shaw Wakefield Bourne Denby Pottery England

Description: This is a stoneware brown colored bottle. This particular bottle bears the mark for the Bourne Denby Pottery near Derby. The bottle is marked "E.P.SHAW & Co. Ld; WAKEFIELD" on the top shoulder in impressed lettering. The bottle has a round flat base with straight rising sides ending at a slightly slanted shoulder which progresses with a curved neck ending in an opening having a formed rim. The bottle has a black colored with partially red stem screw top. The bottle is brown in colors and is glazed. It is thick in construction and has a heavy body. These bottles were usually used for ginger or sarsaparilla beer. However, they were also occasionally used for stout. Please carefully view the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: Uncertain, but most likely sometime between early to mid 1900's.

Origin: Purchased at an estate sale in Southern New Jersey. Bottle made in the UK.

Size: Measures ~3 1/8" in diameter at the base, ~1 3/8" in diameter at the top opening, and is ~8" tall to the top of the screw top. The bottle itself weighs about one and half pounds.

Maker: Bourne Denby Pottery.

Marks: Has the words"E.P.SHAW & Co. Ld; WAKEFIELD" on the top shoulder in impressed lettering. It also has a mark within an oval which reads "BOURNE 6 DENBY" again in impressed lettering on the side near the base.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: Nice old collectible bottle deserving of a spot in your collection.

Condition: The bottle is in very good condition having no breaks, cracks, hairlines, or repairs. The bottle has a small chip at the base which can be seen in the second photo to the left or fifth photo to the right. It also has a few manufacturing defects, which you would expect in such an old stoneware bottle. However, this piece has a minimum of such defects and looks great.
