1968 Portugal 1000 Escudos A Beautiful Almost Uncirculated Banknote Pick Number 175a King Dom Pedro V

  • $ 67.99

Description: A beautiful about uncirculated or better banknote from Portugal. This is the 28 May 1968 one thousand Escudos. This note represents the first issue of the type which lasted for 14 years. The banknote has a blue and black design over a multi-colored underprint. The front has the image of King Dom Pedro V also known as "The Hopeful" who ruled Portugal in the period 1853-1861. The back has the same color scheme as the front, but with more red in the underprint, and depicts the image of conjoined busts to the left of center. The bottom center has an image commemorating the opening of the first railway with a locomotive to the right of center. The note has two signatures on the front as well as the denomination, date and serial number. This particular note has the serial number PB03102, which is displayed twice on the front of the note but not on the back. It is also marked Ch.11. on the front. The back also displays the denomination but not the serial number. The banknote has a watermark depicting the image of King Dom Pedro V. It is marked Mil Escudos Ouro or One Thousand Gold Escudos. The note has a segmented thin security thread to the right of center. Please carefully view scans presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: 28 May 1968.

Printer: Issued by the Bank of Portugal. Printed by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co. of England but not noted on the note.

Size: The banknote measures 6 7/16" by ~3 1/4".

Pick Number: P 175a.

Condition: I would grade this banknote as a choice about uncirculated or better with all the details being very well preserved. The note has one light vertical fold in the center, which is the main reason we grade it AU instead of UNC. The note retains all of its original crispiness, stiffness, and sheen. Its corners are intact, squared with minimum rounding if any. The note has no tears, splits, pinholes, graffiti, or stains. It is clean with no soiling or stains and the edges of the note are intact with no signs of damage, roughness or nicks. Please see photo for additional condition information.
