Banknote 1917 National Bank of Egypt 50 Piastres Sphinx of Giza Signed Rowlatt

  • $ 1,300.00

Description: A nice very good to fine banknote from Egypt. This is the Cairo 4th June 1917 Fifty piastres banknote issued by the National Bank of Egypt. The banknote is brown in color and depicts the image of a Pyramid and the Sphinx on the Giza Egypt Plateau to the left of the front. The back is light blue on what should be multicolored background (the note is soiled and does not show the multicolored background any more). The front shows the serial number, the date and the signature of Frederick Rowlatt (the heavier ink signature-referred to in the Banknote Book as B109b) the governor of the National Bank of Egypt at the time. This particular note has the serial number 021,169 and is from the series P/14, which is displayed two times in black lettering on the front and not on the back. The note has no watermark or security thread. A rare note in any grade worthy of a spot in your collection. Please carefully view scan as it is part and parcel of our description.

Date: 4th June 1917.

Printer: Bradbury, Wilkinson and Co. Ltd Engravers in London, England.

Size: The banknote measures ~5 1/8" by ~3".

Pick Number: P 11 and is listed in the Banknote Book as B109b.

Condition: I would grade this banknote as a nice very good to fine with all the details being still preserved. The note is heavily soiled and has stains but has no graffiti. Its colors have faded and are no longer fresh. The multicloning on the back is no longer observable. The note has three vertical and one central horizontal crease. The note shows signs of heavy circulation with splits at the edge and internally at the points where the vertical creases meet the horizontal crease. The corners are rounded and show losses. The note has lost its original crispiness, stiffness, and sheen and is relatively limp. This is a rare note in any grade and this example is a relatively nice example of this rare note which would make a nice addition to your collection. Please see scans for additional condition information. 4th June 1917.
