1973 Palekh Russian Lacquer Box Scene from Princes Frog Fairy Tale Artist Signed

  • $ 94.99

Description: This is a beautiful nice size round paper-mache or papier-mache Russian Lacquer Box from the Palekh School of lacquer miniatures. The box is round and rather flat in form having a flat bottom with slightly curved sides and a lift-off lid. The lid is decorated with a hand painted colorful miniature of a young man kneeling in front of a crowned frog in the middle of a forest. The frog is holding the arrow the young prince aimed at her. The frog is of course the princesses who will eventually marry the handsome prince. There are trees, flowers and vegetation in the background. The prince has a quiver full of arrows hanging from his waist. The miniature is framed in a gold colored dotted design. There is also a gold colored design on the sides of the box. We believe this is a scene from the fairy tale titled "Frog Princes" but we are unable to fully decipher the Cyrillic title and signature at the lower edge of the miniature painting. We can see the word Palekh, the word Mazkova which could be the artist's signature and we see the date 1973. There is also the number 121 to the left of the word Palekh, which we believe is the number of the pattern or image at the school and the number 2 to the right of the date. The box shows wonderful detail and beautiful colors; A true beauty. The inside of the box is colored in the usual red color used in Russian lacquer boxes. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.
