1547 Vatican Bronze Medal Pope Paul III Anno XVI Naked Ganymede By Il Greco

Description: A rare, restrike from original dies, papal states bronze medal with the image of the bust of Pope Paul III on the obverse. Paul III was pope in the period 1534-1549. The reverse shows the images of Ganymede naked, standing towards left resting one hand on eagle and watering lilies from a vase on his shoulder. A design attributed to Alessandro Cesati better known as Il Greco. A beautiful and fairly unusual artistic design for papal medals. The obverse shows the bust of the pope facing right with the inscription "PAVLVS.III.PONT.MAX.AN.XVI" along the edge surrounding the pontiff's bust. The reverse has a legend inn Greek lettering and the word EYPAINE in Greek lettering in exergue. An interesting and rare re-strike. The medal is nicely toned in a rich brown coloring with very nice eye appeal. The edge of the medal is plain and unmarked. This is a rare nice-looking medal, which would make a worthy addition to any collection. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.

Weight and Size: The medal weighs ~28 grams, is ~40 millimeters in diameter, and ~3 millimeters thick at the edge.

Maker: Struck by the Mint of Rome.
