1697 Papal State Silvered Bronze Oval Medal Monument St. Ignatius of Loyola Rome
Description: A rare oval cast silvered bronze medal for Saint Ignatius of Loyola. The oval medal has an attached loop to hang from. It depicts Saint Ignatius of Loyola's bust facing left with a halo over his head and the sun? in front of his forehead on the obverse. The bust is surrounded by the legend "S*IGNAT*LYOL*SOC*IESV*FVN*". The reverse depicts the monument of saint Ignatius of Loyola in Rome with the legend "ARA.S:IGNAT.LOYO.SACRA" surrounding the image of the monument and the words "ROMAE 1697" in exergue. The monument, which was commissioned in 1694, is located at the Saint Ignatius Chapel in the church of Gesù in Rome. It is not certain why this medal is dated 1697, but we speculate that was when the alter/monument was completed/dedicated. An interesting and rare medal for which we were unable to find a similar example after extensive online search. The medal has lost some of the silvering and shows some pitting but is still in very fine condition with nice eye appeal. The edge of the medal is plain and unmarked. This is a rare nice-looking medal, which would make a worthy addition to any collection. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.
