1814 Bronze Medal General Eleazer Ripley Chippewa Niagara Erie Battles J MI-19
Description: A beautiful mint state bronze medal. This is a medal which was awarded by the US Congress to Brigadier General Eleazer W. Ripley for gallantry and good conduct. The obverse of the medal shows General Ripley in profile facing right with the legend "BRIG.GENERAL ELEZER W. RIPLEY" along the edge above the bust. The reverse of the medal shows a winged victory standing and holding a trumpet and s crown oof laurel in her right hand. She is using her left hand to hang a shield on a palm tree. The shield has the words CHIPPEWA NIAGRA ERIE written on it. There is also the legend "BATTLES OF CHIPPEWA/JULY 5. 1814./NIAGRA JULY 25.1814./ERIE. AUG.15 SEP. 17./1814. The medal was originally designed by Moritz Furst. This medal has a plain edge and was struck from U. S. Mint copy dies sometime during the 20th century. The medal is ~65 mm in diameter, is ~4 mm thick at edge, and weighs ~126 gm. A great historical medal worthy of a spot in your collection.
