1940 National Bank of Egypt 5 Pounds Banknote P# 19c Larger Nixon Signature F+
Description: A fine or much better banknote from Egypt. This is the Cairo 19th November 1940 five pounds banknote issued by the National Bank of Egypt. The banknote is green and purple in color. It depicts the image of the building housing the National Bank of Egypt in Cairo in the center of the front. It also has designs of ancient Egyptian deities in rectangular frames at the top left and right corners of the front. The back is blue and red on green and orange background. The back shows an image of a building surrounded by palm trees in the center. The note has no watermark that we could find. The front of the note indicates that the note was issued according to the decree dated 25th June 1898. This particular note has the serial number 056390 and is from the series M/50, which is displayed three times in black lettering on the front and not on the back. It is signed by Norman Nixon the governor of the National Bank of Egypt at the time. This note is of the larger Nixon signature variety and represents a rather early date with this signature (the first issue of Nixon Signed 5 pounds was 18 November 1940). Please carefully review the scans presented as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: 19th November 1940.
Printer: Bradbury Wilkinson & Co. London, Great Britain.
Size: The banknote measures ~6 3/4" by ~3 1/2".
Pick Number: P 19c, with the larger Nixon signature. It is listed in the Banknote Book as B117d.
Condition: I would grade this banknote as fine or much better with all the details being well preserved. The note is attractive but shows evidence of handling and wear. It has several folds both vertically and horizontally. Paper is soiled and a few minor stains, all of which can be seen in the images presented. The note has one tears in the border area at the right edge that goes into the design (about 12 mm long). Additionally, the edges show wear and have nicks at the end of the folds. The corners are intact with rounding and bumps. The note has blue colored graffiti (the number 14 in Arabic) on the front which have gone through the paper and partially show-up on the back. The note has no pinholes or additional splits. A fine note to add to your collection. Please see scans for additional condition information.
