1940 South African Reserve Bank Five Pounds Banknote Pick Number 86b WBG 35 Very Fine Choice

Description: A beautiful choice very fine Banknote from South Africa. This is the South African Reserve Bank five Pounds note issued 9 September,1940. The banknote is green in color over a light pink background. The note depicts the image of a sailing ship to the left of the front with people in various activities along the bottom and a factory with multiple chimneys spewing smoke to the right. There is a rising sun next to the ship. The back is also green in color and shows the arms of South Africa in the center. The note has a watermark showing the head of J. van Riebeek within the sun's disk. The note is written in English and Afrikaans. The front has one signature, the date and the serial number as well as the denomination. This particular note has the serial number B/16 935667, which is displayed twice on the front in black. The back only displays the name of the bank and the denomination. Please carefully review the scan provided as it is part and parcel of our description.

Printer: The banknote Book suggests it St. Lukes Printing Works of London while World Banknote Grading suggests it was printed by Bradbury Wilkinson & Co England.

Size: The banknote measures ~7" by ~3 13/4".

Pick Number: P 86b and is listed in the Banknote Book as B714b.

Condition: The banknote is graded by World Banknote Grading (WBG) as Choice Very Fine 35. It comes in a plastic holder so labeled. It is our opinion the note is conservatively graded and deserves a higher grade. Be that as it may, this is a beautiful note that is clean and displays fresh and vivid colors.
