1948 Russell Stahl Redware Creamer Olive Green Lead Glaze Applied Handle
Description: A 1937 glazed redware slightly bulbous shaped creamer having an applied handle and a small pinched spout. The creamer is olive-green lead glazed on the inside and out but not on the base. The creamer has a rounded rim with a raised collar ring and two incised shoulder rings. It has round flat base with a tooled canted foot flange. The applied handle is ribbed. The base is incised with indication as to the maker and when it was made. The piece is in great condition with general crazing to the glaze and one or two minor and very small flakes and glaze loss here and there most notable at the base of the handle. The piece also has some roughness along the edge of the base and the top rim. It is signed and dated by the potter Russell Stahl. A great piece of Stahl pottery to add to your collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: The piece is dated April 22, 1948.
Origin: Powder Valley, in Lehigh County Pennsylvania
Size: Measures ~2 1/2" in diameter at the base and ~ 3" in diameter at the top. It is ~5 " at its widest, including the spout and handle, and is ~4" high. The piece weighs a little over 10 ounces.
Maker: Russell Stahl.
Marks: Marked "Made By; R. R. Stahl; 4/22/48" incised in three lines on the bottom of the base. See Last photo for details.
Condition: The pitcher is in very good condition with no chips, breaks, hairlines, or repairs. The piece has general crazing to the glaze. It also has several minor spots of glaze loss especially at the base of the handle. It also has some minor roughness along the edge of the base and along the rim. These spots are not obvious to see but can be felt. The piece also has some of the normal defects you would expect in a piece of primitive pottery of this type such as spots where the glaze did not fully flow, pops, slubs, and surface roughness. Be that as it may, this is a great piece of Southeastern Pennsylvania Redware pottery, in very good condition after being around for 75 years, worthy of a spot in your collection. Please see photos for additional condition information.
