1986 Glazed Redware Slip Decorated Bottle or Flask Adam & Eve Decoration by Lester Breininger

Description: An beautiful slip decorated redware flask or bottle made by Lester Breininger. The flask has a rounded base with outwards rising rounded sides. The bottle is decorated on the front with black slip depicting a biblical scene. The scene is of Adam and Eve under the apple tree with Eve handing Adam an apple. The other side of the bottle has tobacco spit decoration in black all on the brown colored background of the bottle. The bottle has a short neck with a small spout having a rolled edge or rim. A great looking piece of pottery made by the master himself. It is glazed inside and out with the base being unglazed and signed and dated by Lester. A rather beautiful and very interesting bottle made by one of Pennsylvania master potters. A great piece to add to your collection of Breininger. Date: 1986.

Origin: Robesonia, Berks County, Pennsylvania.

Size: This bottle measures ~2 5/8" by ~ 2 1/2" at the base and is ~6 3/4" tall. It is ~4 1/4" by ~3 1/4" at the shoulder and weighs slightly over one pound.

Maker: Lester Breininger.

Marks: The bottle is signed on the bottom in cursive calligraphy "LB 1986 PA."

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a nice and very unusual piece made the master potter, Lester Breininger, himself. A nice and well made piece worthy of a spot in your collection of contemporary redware.

Condition: The bottle is in very good condition. It has no cracks, no repairs, no chips, no apparent crazing (although it is difficult to ascertain because of the coloring) and no hairlines. The bottle does have a few of the usual defects you would expect with all these primitive redware pieces such as pops, slubs, unglazed areas and uneven spots. However, these are original to the making and are difficult to see but can be felt. Regardless this is a beautiful piece in good shape and worthy of a spot in your collection.
