Antique Ambrotype 1/6 Plate Photo of Mother & Son on Her Lap Red Cheeks in Case
Description: Offered here is 1/6 plate of what we believe is an Ambrotype photo of a sitting mother with her son on her lap. The mother is wearing a flower decorated dress with a white collar held together with a brooch and has her hair parted in the middle. The boy on her lap, her son, is wearing dark clothing with a short sleave. Both have red highlights on their cheeks. The photo is in a wooden, pressed wood, or possibly Gutta-percha case with a red velvet padding on the inside of the cover. The case has a hook to close it, which is a bit off because the hinged back has been fixed making the two halves of the frame miss aligned. The case is intact with considerable wear of the coloring and some minor losses. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel pf our description.
Date: Uncertain but most likely sometime in the 1850s.
Origin: USA.
Size: The piece measures ~3 1/4" by ~3 5/8" by ~5/8" when closed. The piece weighs about 2.3 ounces.
Maker: Unknown.
Marks: Unmarked.
Condition: The photo appears to be in very good condition. The case itself has been repaired by applying brown tape to the back (the hinge) to keep both halves together. This repair is a bit off and the hook in the front does not go through the loop to properly lock it. The entire piece is a bit soiled and the interior red material in the back of the lid is worn considerably and lost quite a bit of its plushness. The brass frame and the glass cover are in very good condition and the image itself is in very good condition without fading or losses. In general, the piece is in overall good condition for being around for over 150 years. The hook does not latch properly and the lock does not work as it should. The photo is in a wooden or pressed wood case with a red velvet padding on the inside of the cover. The padding is worn extensively. The case is intact with considerable wear to the surface colors and some minor losses. The red lining on the inside has faded, worn, and is soiled but intact. A great old photo from the 1850s, which would make a nice addition to your collection. The piece shows no apparent oxidation to the brass frame but the hinge of the case has been repaired with brown cloth tape. Other than that, this is a nice and charming old photo to add to your collection. Please see photos for additional condition information.
