Antique Painted Cast Iron Mammy With Hands on Hips Hubley Still Penny Bank

  • $ 137.77

Description:  An antique cast iron bank in the form of a black woman wearing a white apron over a red dress standing with her hands on her hip. The woman appears to be smiling.  The bank retains its original coloring with most of the losses of color being in the face and hands. As we understand it, this bank was manufactured by Hubley Toy Co. of Lancaster Pennsylvania in 1914 through the 1940s. The bank is made of two pieces held together with a screw. The screw appears to be original to the piece. We opened the bank and found the number 812 stamped on both halves. We also observed quite a bit of rust on the inside. The bank has the coin slot in the back between the shoulders. The bank is all original with considerable soiling and rust. It retains quite a bit of its original paint with wear commensurate with its age and the fact that this was a toy played with over the years. The bank has no breaks or repairs. Please see page 71 in Andy and Susan Moor's Book "The Penny Bank Book: Collecting Still Banks" Published by Schiffer Books in 1984, for a photo of a similar example known as Mammy with Hands on Hips (bank number 176).  Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece:  This is a nice penny bank that is all original and in very good condition. It would make a nice addition to your collection.

Condition:  The bank is in good condition. It has no breaks or repairs. The bank is all original and shows quite a bit of rust on the inside and less on the outside. It retains quite a bit of its original paint with wear commensurate with its age and the fact that this was a toy played with over the years. Most of the paint losses appear to be in the face and hands as well as the base and to a lesser degree to the dress and the apron. Be that as it may, this is a very nice bank, which would make a nice addition to your collection. Please view photos to appreciate the beauty of the bank and for additional condition information.
