Description: A great looking circa 1911 antique glazed stein. The stein which is has the Villeroy & Boch Mettlach mark on the bottom is dated 1911. It has a scene depicting six men at a beer drinking picnic. Three are sitting at a table drinking and smoking. Another throwing a ball, a fourth sitting on top odf a barrel observing and the sixth pouring beer from a tap on a barrell. The design is in jasper wear style or raised white over a beautiful orangish-brown colored background. The bolubous shaped stein has a lid having a porcelain center also having a jasper ware design showing a pipe and what looks like root plants in the center. The central porcelain piece of the lid is within what we beleive is a pewter bezel attached to a hinge with a thumb piece. The stein has an applied handle with the hinge for the lid being attached to its top. It has a round recessed bottom with the impressed mark consisting of a castle with the words "METTLACH; VB" under it. It also has the number 11 for 1911. There is also additional numbers and letters impressed and finally the words "MADE IN GERMANY". The stein is marked as to its capacity and indicates it is 3/10 of a liter or slightly ove 10 fluid ounces. This is a stien having great appearance and style with white colored interior. A nice and substantial stein weighing almost one pound and 5 ounces. A beautiful antique stein to add to your collection. Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a nice piece of antique breweriana pottery with very nice decoration and in excellent condition. It would make a nice addition to your collection of antique pottery Steins and Beer related items.
Condition: The piece is in very good condition given it is over 100 years old. It was probably never used and rmains clean and intact. It has no cracks, chips, hairlines, repairs, or crazing to the glaze. The lid is intact and the hinge is solidly in place. The only thing we see is a spot in the mug of the man tapping the barrell (see fourth photo). The spot, which represents a loss or a chip, appears to be an error in the making of the mug since it is glazed over. This stein will display very nicely in your collection. It is a bit soiled and would probably benefit from a good cleaning. This is a very nice piece, which would make a nice addition to your collection.
