Nice Silver Coin 1895 AD 1293 AH year 20 Egyptian Five Piastres or 5 Qirsh Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II

  • $ 167.77

Description: A great looking about uncirculated or much better rare and low mintage silver coin from Egypt. This is a five piastres or 5 qirsh from the reign of Abdul Hamid II the Ottoman Sultan. The coin shows the sultan's toughra, a rose to the right of the toughra, the denomination below it and then a floral vine surrounding it all with two crossed quivers in the bottom on the obverse. The reverse says Duribah Fi Misr (struck in Egypt) with Abdul Hamid accession year of 1293 AH, an indication that the coin was struck in the 20th year of his reign, all of which is surrounded by a floral vine and three stars on top. A beautiful design by Emil Weigand of Berlin Germany as evidenced by the "W" in the bottom of the obverse. It is KM-294 measuring approximately 26 mm in diameter and weighing approximately 7 grams of 0.833 silver. The coin has a reeded rim. Coins of such small denomination and low mintage (464,000) are very rare in such a high grade. They normally were used extensively by the people and were lost or severely abused and eventually were melted for the silver. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: 1895 AD - 1293 AH year 20.

Mint: Egypt.

Size and Weight: This is a 5 piastres or 5 Qirsh. It is ~26 mm in diameter and weighs about 7 grams of 83.3% silver.

References: It is KM #294.

Condition: I would grade this coin as a beautiful about uncirculated or much better with all the details being relatively well preserved. The coin retains some of its original mint luster and has some uneven surface toning as can be seen in the photos. It has a few scratches and minor bag marks but no other observable issues. It is much better than the photos shows. It has minimum wear, if any, commensurate with its age and about uncirculated status. The coin has excellent eye appeal and is beautiful. Please see photo for additional condition information.
