Antique 18th or 19th Century Continental Pewter Open Salt with Octagonal Base
Description: Beautiful antique pewter open table salt with a circular deep tray or bowl on top where the salt would have been placed. The piece has an octagonal base with a short column in its center supporting the open salt tray/bowl on top. both the top of the base and the edge of the open salt bowl are decorated by a repeating short lines design (hashed design). The circular salt tray or bowl on top is also decorated with two concentric circles in its center. We believe the salt is from the end of the 18th to early 19th century. A nice piece of old pewter that is over 200 years old that is in very good condition. It would display nicely in your collection. Date: Late 18th to early 19th centuries (Late 1700s to early 1800s)
Origin: Purchased at an estate sale in Southeastern Pennsylvania. We believe the piece was made somewhere in Europe.
Size: The salt is ~2 3/8" high with the base being ~3" in diameter, and is ~2 1/2" in diameter on top. The salt weighs about 4 ounces.
Maker: Unknown.
Marks: The salt is unmarked as to the maker with a faint marking showing he number "560" on the inside of the base. This is most likely the reference number of the piece of the previous owner's collection.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A nice antique, which would display very well in your collection.
Condition: This salt is in good used condition. It shows pitting and wear commensurate with its age and utilitarian function in the salt bowl on top. The piece is intact and have been cleaned as it should to restore it to its original look and beauty. The piece has scratches throughout and minor dings here and there. It also shows minor pitting along the edge of the base. Be that as it may, the piece is intact and in very good condition given that it is over 200 years old.
