Antique Pewter Small Drinking Cup Round Base, Curved Sides, and Applied Handle

  • $ 59.99

Description: Beautiful antique small pewter cup with applied handle. The cup has a round base and a rising outwards curved side ending in a plain rim. The cup is unmarked as to the maker or its origin. We believe the cup to be from the 1800s. The plain cup is decorated with two sets of incised lines, one at a third of the way up from the base and the second about two third the way above the base. The cup has a beautiful warm gray age patina. A beautiful cup to add to your collection. See item 1021 in "Pewter of The Western World 1600-1850" by Peter Hornsby and published by Schiffer Publishing Ltd in Exton PA in 1983 for a similar cup identified as "cup or handled beaker circa 1820-40". A nice piece of old pewter that is about 200 years old that is in good condition. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: Early to mid 19th century (early to mid 1800s).

Origin: Purchased at an estate sale in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The piece was most likely made in New York US.

Size: The cup is ~2 3/4" high with the base being ~2 1/4" in diameter and the top being ~2 7/8" in diameter. The cup weighs slightly over 4 ounces.

Maker: Unknown.

Marks: Unmarked, the piece has the word Nickels scratched near the edge of the base.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A nice antique, which would display very well in your collection.

Condition: This cup is in good condition. It has no breaks, cracks, or repairs. The piece has aged into a nice warm gray patina. It is soiled and could use a good cleaning, which we leave to the discretion of the new owner. The surface inside and out has scratches and some minor dings. The top of the beaker is a bit bent and is out of round. The piece has the word "Nickels" scratched near the edge of the base, right where the handle meets the cup (very difficult to photograph but can be partially seen in the last photo). Be that as it may, this is still a very nice antique that would make a great addition to your collection. Please view photos for additional condition information.
