Antique Quart Pewter Tankard Mug Marked Chester Co. EXDC Fleur-de-lis Imperial

Description: Antique large and heavy pewter mug or tankard. The mug which can accommodate 32 fluid ounces (one quart) has straight sides with banding at the base. The tankard has a round base and inwards rising straight sides ending at a plain rim extending outward beyond the sides. The tankard has banding at the base and additional lines about a third up the side from the base. The mug has an applied handle with its end resting flat against the side. This mug is similar in shape, form, and style to mug number 956 in Peter Hornsby's book "Pewter of the Western World 1600-1850" published in 1983 by Schiffer Publishing Limited of Exton, which is described as "Straight sided quart with banding at base, circa 1830." The piece is marked near the top opposite the handle in circular fashion "CHESTER CO." with letters EXDC below it. It is also marked with a Fleur-de-lis and the word IMPERIAL below it near the top close to the handle. This is a large (one quart or 32 fluid ounces) and heavy weighing about one pound and twelve ounces. A great antique to add to your collection. Date: Circa 1830.

Origin: Purchased at an estate sale in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Size: Measures ~4" in diameter at top and ~4 7/8" in diameter at the base. It is ~6 1/2" at its widest including the handle, and is ~6" high. The piece weighs about one pound and 12 ounces.

Maker: Unknown.

Marks: The piece is marked near the top opposite the handle in circular fashion "CHESTER CO." with letters EXD/C below it. It is also marked with a Fleur-de-lis and the word IMPERIAL below it near the top close to the handle.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This nice antique pewter drinking implement worthy of a spot in your collection.

Condition: This mug is in good condition with no breaks or repairs. It does have some scratches and minor dings, as well as some minor dark spots, which we believe can be cleaned but we leave that to the discretion of the new owner.
