Vintage French Pewter Soup Canister Pail Pot w/ Screw-on Lid Having Top Handle
Description: A vintage and rather unusual pewter soup canister, container, or pail. This round container has a round footed base rising to a round body ending in a long neck with a threaded end. There is a lid, having a handle, that screws onto the threaded end. The pail has an internal lid that fits tightly into a round opening with a knob handle to pull it off and expose the content. The piece is marked on the top of the screw on lid. We believe the piece was made in France as evidenced by the French words on top of the lid. The piece has acquired a nice warm gray age patina and looks great. A nice vintage pewter canister, which would make a nice addition to your collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: Unknown, but possibly sometime in the late 1800s to mid 1900s, could be earlier.
Origin: Was purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Size: The canister measures ~3 3/8" in diameter at the base, it is ~5 1/4" at its widest, and is ~7" high to the top of the handle with the lid fully screwed on. The piece weighs about one pound and ~14 ounces.
Maker: Unknown.
Marks: Marked on the top of the lid with circle having the words TITRE LEGAL.GARENTI. along the circumference and having the letters "J.R" in the center of the circle. There is also the number 2 on the opposite side of the lid.
Condition: The pail/container is in very good condition given its age and utilitarian function. It has no breaks, cracks, or repairs. The piece has a warm gray age patina on its exterior and shows a lot of character. It shows some scratches and minor dings. It is soiled and has some stains. The screw-on lid is intact and screws onto the canister well. The pull-out internal lid does not sit tightly in place but fits well and can be inserted in place easily. The inside of the canister is soiled, has remnants of what we believe is foodstuff, and shows marks of use. This is a used food/soup pewter canister and shows it. A very nice piece worthy of a spot in your collection of vintage pewter. It would probably benefit from a good cleaning to bring out its full beauty, but we leave that to the discretion of the new owner. Please see photo for additional condition information.
