1736 Copper Medal Zurich Rudolf Brun 400th Anniv. Brunschen Constitution Gessner

Description: A nice extremely fine or better copper medal dated 1763. This is a portrait medal depicting the bust of Rudolf Brun of the Swiss Canton of Zurich on the obverse. The bust is facing right and has the inscription "RUDOL. BRUN MILES PRIMUS MAGISTER CIVIUM" along the edge surrounding it. There is also the date 1736 below it and the initials HIG below the shoulder. The reverse shows a circle formed by thirteen shields and arms of the thirteen guilds of Zurich established in 1736 with the legend "FUNDAMENTUM REIPUB. TIGURINAE" surrounding an alter or table with center panel on which shields, arms of Zurich color indicated by Arabesque; on it open book or charter with large seal inscribed EID ZUR BRIEF ICH on top of it all in the center. There is also the Roman numerals MCCCXXXVI, for the year 1336, below the alter. The medal is Commemorating 400th Anniversary of the Brunschen Constitution. Weight and Size: The medal weighs ~45.2 grams, is ~48.5 millimeters in diameter, and ~4.5 millimeters thick at the edge.

Maker: Unknown.

Marks: The medal has a plain edge but has the initial HIG under the shoulder of Rudolf Brun on the obverse for HJ Gessner.

References: The medal is listed in Haller as number151, it is Wund-835, SM-253, and is No. 27 in "A Descriptive Catalog of Swiss Coins" in the South Kensington Museum in London.
