1938 Thomas Stahl Glazed Redware Miniature Jar Lug Handles Greenish Brown Color
Description: A small or miniature redware bulbous jar with wide flared mouth and lug handles. The jar has a flat round base with curved rising sides ending in a high shoulder. The shoulder supports a wide outwards flared mouth, The jug has two lug handles at the shoulder. The piece is glazed inside and out but not on the base. The jar has a coloring typical of the Stahl Pottery. It is greenish brown with reddish brown highlights and a mottled appearance. The pot is small in size, ~3 1/8 inches high and 3 inches in diameter at the top. The jar has two small applied lug or ear shaped handles. The jar has two incised parallel lines on the outside under the handles for decoration. The base extends outward beyond the bottom of the sides of the jar. The piece is glazed inside and out but not on the bottom, which shows typical coloring of unglazed redware. The bottom is signed and dated by Thomas Stahl. The piece is all original and is in very good condition. It has no breaks, no chips, and no repairs. The piece has general crazing to the glaze and some of the usual manufacturing defects you would expect in a primitive piece of redware of this vintage such as pops, slubs, areas where the glaze did not fully flow, and unglazed spots. These issues are minor with the exception of one spot which we show in the last photo where it appears the glaze has exploded during the firing and exposed a small hole on the surface. Be that as it may, this is just a great looking piece made in the Stahl Pottery in Powder Valley Pennsylvania. The bottom shows details about the potter and the pottery as well as the date the piece was made. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Size: The pot is ~2 3/8" in diameter at the base, ~3" in diameter at the top, it is ~3 1/2" at its widest including the two handles, and is ~3 1/8" high. It weighs almost 6.5 ounces.

Marks: Marked "Made/ In/ Stahl Pottery/ By/ Thomas Stahl/ June 28/ 1938" incised on the bottom of the base (see two next to last photos for further details).
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a very nice piece in form and color that is in nice condition after being around for over 80 years made by one of the best and most famous potters from Southeastern Pennsylvania. Very well done and would display very well in your collection of Pennsylvania redware.
Condition: The Jar is in very good condition with no cracks, hairlines, or chips. The piece is all original and is in very good condition, except for the handle which was broken in the past and has been glued in about four spots has. Other than that, the piece has no breaks, no chips, and no other repairs. The piece has general crazing to the glaze and some of the usual manufacturing defects you would expect in a primitive piece of redware of this vintage such as pops, slubs, areas where the glaze did not fully flow, and unglazed spots. This piece has very few such issues and generally minor in appearance with the exception of one spot which we show in the last photo where it appears the glaze has exploded during the firing and exposed a small hole on the surface. This spot is barely obvious in reality but we are detailing it here for completeness. Be that as it may, this is a very nice and rather rare piece is such good condition worthy of a spot in your collection. Please see photos for additional condition information.
