1948 South African Reserve Bank Five Pounds Banknote Pick Number 95 Good Fine or Much Better Currency Note
Description: A nice fine or much better Banknote from South Africa. This is the South African Reserve Bank Five Pounds note issued 1 November,1959. This is the first date for the type and as such key date. The banknote is green with brown and orange on the front. The front displays the portrait of Jan Van Riebeeck in an oval frame in the top left corner of the front. The front also shows a woman seated with an anchor in the bottom left corner, a wagon drawn by what looks like mules in the bottom center, a man with a rifle on horseback on a rock watching the wagon, and two cattle grazing. The back is also green in color and displays a sail ship in the middle of the ocean. The note is written in Afrikaans and English with the first line of the bank name and value in Afrikaans thus making this as Pick 95. The front has one signature, the date and the serial number as well as the denomination. This particular note has the serial number C over 1 129373, which is displayed twice on the front in black. The back only displays the name of the bank and the denomination. The note has a watermark displaying the portrait of Jan Van Riebeeck. Please carefully review the scan provided as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: 1 November 1948 representing the first issue of this series.
Printer: Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co.
Size: The banknote measures ~6 1/2" by ~3 1/2". Pick Number: P 95 and is listed in the Banknote Book as B723a.
Condition: I would grade this banknote as a good fine or much better. The note has several vertical folds and a horizontal fold. It has been lightly pressed and has a small tear (~2 mm long) on the bottom edge slightly left of center. The note has some minor overall wrinkling, is lightly soiled in general, has a few small stains but has no large or objectionable stains. The note has no graffiti, no pinholes, and no splits. The edges are intact but show some roughness and some nicks at the ends of the folds. The note retains some of its original stiffness and crispiness. The corners are intact with some bumps and are rounding. The colors of the note are clear, vivid and bright. A very nice note in fine condition to add to your collection. Please see photo for additional condition information.
