1992 Lester & Barbara Breininger Limited Ed. Redware Plate Flowers and Leaves
Description: This is a nice glazed and sgraffito decorated redware plate in the best Pennsylvania Dutch tradition. The plate, which we believe was made by Lester and Barbara Breininger personally, has a slightly flattened base with flared rounded sides rising to a lightly coggled edge. The plate is decorated with a sgraffito design depicting a repeating pattern along the edge of flowers and leaves (or possibly birds) with the center having a large single flower. The plate has a yellow colored ground with the sgraffito design showing brown colors. The plate also has green highlight indicative of copper oxide. The plate is glazed with unglazed back having the characteristic color of unglazed redware. The back signed L&B Breininger for Lester && Barbara (his wife) Breininger. This is an early plate made by Lester Breininger himself with assistance from his wife Barbara. The plate is also dated 1992 and marked 7/30 suggesting that Lester and Barbara only made 30 plates with this design in 1992 and this was the seventh plate. This type of decoration is very much in the Pennsylvania Dutch style common in southeastern Pennsylvania specifically in Bucks, Montgomery, Chester, and Lancaster counties. Size: Measures ~6 3/4" in diameter on top and is ~1 1/4" high. The piece weighs about 11 ounces.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A beautiful early plate made by Lester Breininger the master himself with the help of his wife Barbara. A beautiful redware piece, which deserves a prominent spot in your redware collection.
Condition: Plate is in excellent condition. It has no cracks, chips, repairs, or hairlines. The plate has general crazing to the glaze throughout. The back has residue of glue from a tape that was attached to the plate in the past. The plate also has a few of the usual defects you would expect with all these primitive redware pieces such as pops, slubs, unglazed areas and uneven spots. However, this plate has a minimum number of these, which are hardly noticeable. Just a great early plate made by the master himself with the help of his wife to add to your collection.
