Antique Hubley Cast Iron Large and Heavy Doorstop Full Figure Setter Dog
Description: A antique cast iron large and heavy cast iron doorstop. This doorstop, which was most likely made by Hbley, is in the form of a black and off-white setter dog. The dog is standing on all four. The piece is painted in off white coloring with black highlights at the ears, face and within the body in a few spots. It is made two pieces and held together with a screw. The screw is hard to see because it is painted over. The piece is rather heavy (weighs 8 pounds and 9 ounces) and is rather large (15.5 inches long). This doorstop shows a Setter standing on all four with his tail extending straight backwards. The doorstop shows details of the dog's face and hair on its body. A beautiful and rather substantial doorstop depicting one of the most favored dogs. See page 123 in John and Nancy Smith's "The Doorstop Book" published by Schiffer Publishing Ltd of Atglen, PA in 2006 for a similar example. Date: Uncertain, but most likely early to mid 1900s (early to mid 20th century).
Origin: Purchased at an estate sale in Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Size: The dog measures ~15 1/2" in length, is ~8 5/8" at its highest, and ~4 1/4" at its widest (at the base of the hind legs). The piece weighs about 8 pounds and 9 ounces.
Maker: Most likely made by Hubley.
Marks: Unmarked on the outside. We did not attempt to open the piece to check for marks on the inside.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a great antique doorstop of a great dog. A very nice collectible piece. It would make a great addition to your collection.
Condition: The doorstop itself is in very good condition. It has no breaks, no repairs, and no losses. The dog's colors are nice but shows some loss of the paint throughout. There is also some discoloration and lightning up of the colors but very few and minor spots where the paint is lost to the point of showing the bare metal under it. These are not an issue and rather give the piece a nice look. A great looking piece which would display nicely in your collection. Please view photos for additional condition information.
