Description: A circa 1855 transfer ware or transferware plate with a colorful central scene. This earthenware proverbs plate is polychromal decorated with a colorful scene showing a man sitting in front of what looks like an old time inn. The man is wearing a top hat and has a beer in his hand, there is a young man standing in the doorway and another leaning on a yellow wall sleeping. It looks likle they have just finished a bowling type game where you can see the pins and a black round ball. There is a verse surrounding the central scene. The verse says "DOST THOU LOVE LIFE. THEN DO NOT SQUANDER TIME. THERE WILL BE SLEEPING ENOUGH IN THE GRAVE." This round proverbs plate has a foot and a white edge surrounding the central design. The edge is decorated with a raised design of a tulip, a foxglove and a sheaf of wheat. It also has a green line at the edge of the plate under the glaze. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.
