Fantastic 1996 Schimmel Like Carved Wood Polychrome Painted Eaglet By Jonathan Bastian
Description: A nice primitive Schimmel like polychrome painted carved wood sculpture in the form of an eaglet standing on a green base by Jonathan Bastian. The eaglet or the baby eagle has a large or exaggerated yellow beak. The eaglet is painted in off-white color red, yellow and black highlights throughout. The eaglet has carved eyes having a central black pupil. The bird's legs are yellow in color and have black nails or claws and is resting on the green colored base. The piece is signed JB 96. This piece is very much in the Pennsylvania Dutch wood carving tradition instituted by Wilhelm Schimmel of Cumberland County Pennsylvania in mid to late 1800s and the eaglet represents one of the most desirable forms. Origin: Was purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Size: Measures ~6" high with the base being ~3 1/4" by ~2 1/4". The piece weighs about 4 ounces.
Maker: Jonathan Bastian.
Marks: Marked JB 96 incised on the bottom.
Condition: The piece is in very good condition with minimal wear to the finish. The piece has some minor scratches, one or two small dings to the surface of the wood and general light soiling. Be that as it may, the piece is solid, beautiful, has a lot of character, and would display very nicely inn your collection. Please see photos for additional condition information.
