Late 1900s Folk Art Love Birds Polychrome Painted Composition By J R Dierwechter
Description: A nice folk art polychrome painted composition sculpture in the form of two love bids standing in front of each other and kissing by John R Dierwechter. The folk-art birds are standing on a raised green colored base with red highlights and brown top decorated with flowers. The birds are brown in color with red wings and black beaks, eyes, and toes. The birds are facing each other in the typical Pennsylvania pose of Love Birds. The birds are obviously kissing. The base is stamped with the initials JRD within three rectangular deep impressions. This is piece is made in the best folk art tradition of the Pennsylvania Dutch and mimics chalkware pieces from the 19th and early 20th century. Mr. Dierwechter who died in 1996, lived and worked in Lebanon County Pennsylvania. This piece was most likely made some time in the period 1960s- 1980s. Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Lancaster County Pennsylvania.
Size: The piece measures ~3 1/2" by ~1 1/8" at the base, is ~3" at its highest, is ~1 1/4" at its widest, and is ~4 3/4" at its longest. The piece weighs almost 4 ounces.
Maker: John R Dierwechter. Mr. Dierwechte lived in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania and died in 1996.
Marks: Marked on the bottom with the impressed letters JRD within three separate rectangles.

Condition: The piece is in excellent condition, with no breaks, cracks, losses, or repairs. It does have some minor scratches but no paint losses that we could see. The piece is also a bit soiled but all of these issues are minor and difficult to see. Other than that, the piece is in excellent condition and looks great.
