Vintage Carved Wood Polychrome Painted Shorebird Decoy Ross E. Shourds

  • $ 64.99

Description: A beautiful polychrome painted shorebird decoy. This carved wood decoy is painted and shows the bird standing on a wooden base with its head pointing slightly sideway. The bird has black colored eyes with white pupils as well as a black colored beak. The bird is attached to the base with thin metal cylindrical legs. The bird is gray and black in color with white neck, breast and bottom. The bird is well done and is signed on the bottom of the tail as well on the bottom of the base both in pen "Ross E. Shourds" in cursive calligraphy. Ross Shourds originally from Barnegat Bay, New Jersey, moved to Mainesburg, PA where is currently working. This piece was probably made while he was working in New Jersey instead of being made in Pennsylvania. A great looking piece which would make a great addition to your collection or can be used as a decorative accent in your shore cottage. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: Uncertain but most likely mid to late 20th century.

Origin: Purchased at an estate sale in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Size: The decoy measures ~6" long with the base being ~3 1/2" by ~4" and piece is ~5 3/4" at its highest point. The piece weighs about 3 ounces.

Maker: Ross E. Shourds.

Marks: Signed on the bottom of the tail as well on the bottom of the base both in pen "Ross E. Shourds" in cursive calligraphy.

Condition: The piece is in excellent condition with minimum wear or losses to the finish. The piece has no breaks or repairs. It has a few scratches to the surface and minor losses to the paint, which given the way the piece is painted blends in very well. The piece is slightly soiled but nothing of true concern. This is a solid, and beautiful piece with lots of character, and would display very nicely in your collection or make for a nice decorative accent. Please see photos for additional condition information.
