The woman is holding a broom in one hand while resting her other hand on her side. She is wearing a bonnet, a scarf and an apron. This redware figure is decorated with manganese slip highlights throughout. It is also decorated with copper slip at the base. Finally, the piece is covered with a lead glaze to give it a very fine and shiny look. This was probably a child's toy and it is a wonder that it is still in one piece. We have been collecting redware for a long time and we have never seen something like that. The piece has beautiful details such as the straw on the broom, the ruffles in the dress, the decoration on the scarf, the details of her fingers, the details in her face, and the general details of her clothing.  The piece, which is in great shape, has a wonderful form and is of a nice size. The piece, which is dated 1985, represents a standing father Christmas, Santa Clause or as Terri says a Belsnickel (The German Santa or the Pennsylvania Dutch Santa who is tough on Children and makes them be good). The figurine shows Santa wearing a long coat, tied with a rope around his waist. The coat has a pointed hood, which covers the Belsnickel's head. He is also wearing mitten, boots and has a long beard. The coloring of the piece is rather different and very interesting as it is grayish brown with brown and black highlights. The black highlights are indicative of manganese glazing. The piece is glazed throughout except for the base which is marked with the date and LB for Lester Breininger, suggesting that the piece was made by the master potter himself. The piece shows good details of Santa's coat, face and beard. The base of the figurine is unglazed and shows the color of unglazed redware. Very interesting Pennsylvania Dutch piece, by a master potter with the right heritage. The cast figurine has nice details and relatively well defined given the size of the piece. It has no cracks, hairlines, chips, or repairs.  It does have general crazing to the glaze throughout. It also has a firing crack, which we show in the 6th and 9th photos. This crack, which is original to the making of the piece is glazed over and does not compromise neither the integrity or the beauty of the piece. In addition, the piece has small firing cracks on the nose and the beard, see third photo, which again have been glazed over and original to the making of the piece same as a small nick at the base, which is also original to the making and glazed over. The piece also has some of the usual defects that you would expect to find in a primitive piece of pottery such as pops, slubs, and areas where the glaze did not fully flow. Be that as it may, this is a beautiful, unusual, and rare piece in very good shape by the master potter Lester Breininger. This particular Ocarina has 11-holes and the mouth piece does project from the body. The piece is colored in black and the finger holes are numbered and lettered in gold coloring. The piece is also decorated with gold coloring at the two ends. The Ocarina is also stamped with the letter \"G\" and the number \"9\" near where the mouth piece meets the body of the instrument. The piece also has some of the manufacturing defects you would expect in a primitive piece of redware of this vintage such as pops, slubs, areas where the glaze did not fully flow, and unglazed spots. This piece has very few such issues with two spots where the glaze did not fully cover the redware one at 6:00 O'clock in the fifth photo and the other is at about 2:00 O'clock in the sixth photo as well as a scuffed spot seen at 10:00 O'clock in the fifth photo. It does have one chip to the outside edge of the rim and a few smaller ones all of which can be seen in the photos. The piece is a bit mis-shapen and is off round on the top. The exterior is also a bit mis-shapen on one side which confirms that the piece is a true primitive piece. There are spots of glaze on the outside suggesting sloppiness in the making.
